In a recent news bulletin it was reported that a courier van that was stolen in Sheffield was located and apprehended by the police using it’s on board Vehicle Tracking System.
The thief took the vehicle whilst the driver was obtaining a signature for the delivery of goods despite the location being in a compound where security guards were also present. The thief obviously thought he had struck lucky as on board the vehicle was a navigation system but what he didn’t know was that this also had integrated tracking capabilities and the head office could locate the vehicle at any time.
The exact positioning of the van which had been stolen were then handed over to the police and any up to date real time positioning so they were able to locate the vehicle via the police helicopter and direct on the ground police officers to it so within a minimal amount of time they were able to stop the driver in Rotherham and he was arrested and the van returned.
The Director of the courier firm was reportedly interviewed and advised that the main objective for having them fitted was to relay collection and delivery information without having to use mobile phones. Simply by tapping the screen you are able to acknowledge an instruction and then once done so the route is mapped and sent through to the driver.
