A vehicle tracking application is the software that allows a user to access the data being fed back from a vehicle.
A tracking system requires a small device to be installed into the vehicle. These devices continually receive signals from GPS (Ground Positioning System) satellites and use them to accurately report its current location. The location data is then sent through the mobile network and made available to the user via an internet based tracking application.
The application provides tracking data to the user through live mapping, reporting and notifications. Live mapping displays a vehicles current location alongside data such as the direction it is heading (North, East etc – also normally visually represented), speed, and current journey time.
Reports allow you to view a vehicle’s historic journeys. Reports also provide key information relating to a drivers working day such as daily start and finish times, sites visited, total driving time and total time on site.
Notifications can be configured to inform you in real time if a pre determined event that is of concern to you takes place. The most common notifications that are setup are for excessive idling and speeding events as they increase a company’s fuel expenses and can risk driver safety. However, others can be configured to inform you of when a vehicle has arrived at a location or if they have not started their day on time.
