Vehicle tracking software is an interface that allows a user to monitor company vehicles and configure their tracking setting.
There are 2 main forms of tracking software: internet based and thin client. A thin client tracking system requires the user to install/download a small application to every PC they intend to use the tracking system from which must have an internet connection. Internet based tracking software does not require any software downloads (plug ins may be required so that the application can operate properly) and can be accessed from any PC that has an internet connection. Whilst a thin client can be faster and more secure it is limited to the computers it has been installed on. Many consumers tend to favour internet based tracking applications due to their increased accessibility and that any updates to the system are instantly available without the requirement for further downloads.
Within the applications users are able to identify the real time location of their vehicles which is normally displayed against a map. Many tracking systems now include a satellite overlay allowing users to further identify their vehicles location. Other key features in many tracking systems include a report generator that allows users to compare and analyse historic journey data and to be able to configure alarms for real time notifications.
