Companies specialising in frozen and chilled distribution have found many benefits from installing a vehicle tracking system.
Major retailers have strict procedures that need to be adhered to regarding the temperature and time that a delivery needs to be made. For frozen foods this temperature needs to be -18 degrees or below. Booking times need to be kept to, as many warehouses have a set amount of time to unload the trailer, complete the paperwork and get the trailer out of the loading bay again.
If products are delivered above temperature or the trailer arrives late then the delivery can be rejected at depot. This incurs cost for both the distributor and the supplier, as they will have fuel costs to pay and a loss of sales.
Vehicle tracking can help to counter these occurrences by providing alerts if the temperature in the trailer rises above a set temperature. Temperatures inside the vehicles can rise because a lorry may deliver to multiple other customers before arriving at depot. The back of the vehicle would have had to be open to offload each delivery, causing a rise in temperature.
The driver will know to secure the back of the vehicle when the alert sounds to prevent delivery rejection at depot.
