GPS technology is an innovation that has been developing for decades, and is now a mainstream tool for tracking individuals and vehicles. Fleet managers have become more positive towards installing vehicle tracking into their fleet. However, some employees are still refusing to embrace vehicle tracking as a tool that can support them, as well as their company.
This is because employees can see the installation of vehicle tracking as part of a ‘big brother’ culture, where their superiors just want to ‘keep tabs’ on them. The truth is, of course, that there are large benefits for managers to know where their fleet vehicles are at all times.
This way, managers are aware if their employees are fulfilling their commitments in terms of working hours, meeting targets and if they are performing any restricted activity during their working day. ‘Restricted activities’ could include late starting/early finishing or visiting competitors, for example.
Employees can benefit from vehicle tracking because their managers can recognise how hard they are working, and promotion opportunities may arise from this. Areas that require training can be addressed, so that employees can maximise their skills. As a general rule, if an employee is not doing anything wrong then they have nothing to fear from the installation of a vehicle tracking system.
