Retailers require that frozen and chilled foods are delivered into their depots below certain temperatures to guarantee their quality. If a delivery rises above this temperature (-18 degrees for frozen goods) then the goods will be rejected, and the supplier will be unable to obtain payment. They will also have to pay for the cost of transporting the goods back to their place of storage.
The temperature in trailers rises as the cold air mixes with warmer air from outside. Thus, it is extremely important to ensure that trailer doors are left open for the minimum amount of time possible. This can be done by placing the goods in the trailer in the order that they will be delivered. For example, the first delivery will be placed at the front of the trailer, closest to the doors. However, goods can still rise above temperature, even when these precautions are taken.
Vehicle tracking suppliers can help distribution companies save money by installing a small device into the trailer of the vehicle that alarms when the temperature raises a set amount above the temperature it legally needs to be kept at. Drivers will then know that they have to shut the trunk as soon as possible, and rejections will be minimised.
