Although a relatively new development tracking systems with Integrated Sat Nav are creating a big stir in the tracking industry. Integrated systems seamlessly combine the latest fleet tracking systems with Sat Nav routing, live traffic information and 2 way driver messaging to manage and optimize fleet movements better than ever before.
First introduced by TomTom WORK in 2006, Integrated Sat Nav has been a big success and in just a few years the technology has evolved greatly with several tracking providers now offering integrated solutions giving potential buyers a wide choice of systems.
But at up to double the price of a standard tracking system do they make sense financially?
Why Consider Integrated Sat Nav?
Tracking solutions with Integrated Sat Nav are all about being more efficient. They help a fleet save money and improve service by giving the business visibility of their operation, giving drivers optimal routes and helping them to avoid traffic and by allowing the office to communicate with the drivers much more efficiently.

Drivers that spend less time in traffic will spend less time on the road and use less fuel, this in turn means they can do more jobs per day. Based on these benefits alone an average fleet of vans fitted with a tracking system with Integrated Sat Nav could realize savings of over £200 per vehicle per month.
A typical fleet will see cost reductions in 4 key areas…
- Reduced Communications Costs: 40%
- Less Driving Distance: 11%
- Fewer Driving Hours: 18%
- Reduced Fuel Usage: 15%
- Up to 10% Increase In Productivity
The same fleet using a tracking system with Integrated Sat Nav will also benefit from productivity increases of an average of 10%, some companies report increases in productivity of up to 80%! Less time spent driving and in traffic, better time management and improved communication all help to reduce time spent on the road and increase the number of jobs completed each day.Source: TomTom, Vodafone, Navteq, Frost&Sullivan
Benefits Of Sat Nav Integrated Tracking
- Better Control And Decision Making
Vehicle tracking systems give businesses live visibility of their fleet allowing them to make informed decisions about the allocation of work and providing the tools needed to find furthers efficiencies in the way they work.
- More Efficient Travel Tracking systems with Integrated Sat Nav work like any other Sat Nav system and guide drivers to their destinations via the most efficient routes. The latest generation of Sat Nav’s also provide live traffic information and automatic re-routing around traffic problems.
- Improved Communications Integrated solutions use the Sat Nav touch screen as a way of communicating with the driver. The office can send messages to the driver and the driver can reply, often simply by touching Yes or No. All messages or jobs are stored for later viewing and if an address is included the driver can initiate route guidance with one click.
- Improved Driver Safety Not having to read maps and being, steering clear of jams and being on time takes a lot of the stress out of driving for work. Less time spent driving and fewer miles will also inevitably lead to fewer accidents.
- Improved Customer Service Accurate ETA’s and better communication with customers’ means that customer service can be greatly improved with integrated solutions. Less time wasted in traffic and more productive workers also means that more jobs are done per day and therefore job lead times are shorter.

1. The Tracking Unit
The tracking unit is installed professionally in the vehicle, it is the hub of the system and is connected to the mobile data network (i.e. Vofafone). As well as calculating and sending back the vehicles position, speed and direction of travel the tracking unit is also the interface between the Sat Nav unit and tracking application.
2. The Sat Nav Unit
Connected to the Tracking unit using a wire, or a wireless link the Sat Nav terminal not only acts as an independent navigation device but also as a 2 way messaging system allowing the office to send messages, destinations or jobs to the driver and allowing the driver to respond safely using the touch screen. Because it is linked to the mobile network through the tracking unit the Sat Nav terminal also provides up to the minute live traffic and road safety information to the driver.
3. The Tracking Application
Like all tracking systems the tracking application displays the precise whereabouts, speed and direction of travel of each vehicle. However because of the Sat Nav link it can also tell you where the vehicle is going, it’s ETA and it allows the office to send messages, jobs and routes to the driver for display on the Sat Nav screen. Most systems can also be linked to the back office system.
