Fleet tracking systems provide companies and fleet managers with the information they need to reduce operational costs such as fuel consumption, increase driver activity and deliver improved customer service.
These vehicle fleet systems require a small tracking device to be installed into a vehicle. Tracking devices continually receive GPS (Global Positioning System) transmissions from multiple GPS satellites that are orbiting the Earth. The device uses these signals to accurately calculate its global position in longitude and latitude. In addition, these tracking devices also calculate a vehicle’s speed and direction of travel. Vehicle fleet tracking devices generally use the mobile phone network to feedback the above data to the tracking application.
The majority of tracking applications allow users to view their vehicle’s locations in real time and also provide access to historic journey data and a range of reports. Many fleet vehicle tracking systems provide a Geofence feature that allows users to set a virtual ‘ring fence’ around a location of importance to their business. When a vehicle enters or exits a Geofence, alerts can be generated to immediately notify users of the event. In addition, Geofences also provide a name to an address such as that of a customer or employee. This helps users to easily identify where their vehicles are visiting.
