Trailer tracking and vehicle tracking are in many ways very similar. However, tracking a trailer does require a tracking system to work in a unique way. This is because trailers can be regularly hitched and unhitched to many different lorry tractors and therefore it seems to be more important to the manager they have load visibility rather than the fuel consumption or time sheet validations that are more relevant to fleet tracking systems.
There are many more benefits to trailer tracking such as real time location so managers can advise customers with real time shipping and also counteracting theft.
Many companies that have now taken on tracking have been heard to say that before they had a tracking system fitted they spent hours of a day trying to locate where their lorry was and how long it would be before arriving at the destination, all of which can be a very frustrating task when you cannot make contact and the customers is harassing you for an answer.
The benefits of trailer tracking are simple. The manager has full knowledge of where his Lorries are. With this he can get them back into operation swiftly to make them more productive and able to jump on every opportunity therefore generating more revenue.
Unfortunately some employees have been known to use their vehicles for side jobs. Having a trailer tracking system installed eliminates this problem and provides the fleet manager with piece of mind as to where his assets are.
As a trailer tracking system is not installed into the vehicle itself but onto the removable unit it may be exposed to the weather and therefore needs to cope with this and be in a place where it cannot be tampered with.
