Telematics suppliers often have strong claims that tracking genuinely helps business to cut costs and provide a better service but can this really be the case?
Operations Development Manager at Tesco.com, Dave Crellin has said Yes to this claim, tracking really does help and that since having around two thousand of his vans fitted with tracking systems in 2008, Tesco have saved themselves around 12% on fuel and incredibly 6% in accident damage. These figures alongside a better customer service they are now able to offer put the telematics industry in a great light.
As you can imagine Tesco’s fuel bill was pretty high since they cover around 60 million miles per year and getting these fuel costs down was crucial to them. Also their environmental impact was of importance alongside improving driver behaviour.
With regards to the way the drivers felt about being tracked, most of the 6000 drivers seemed to take the change rather well, there were possibly a few drivers who were not happy about being tracked but on the whole the reception was good.
For driver purposes a league table was set up at each depot where points would be deducted for poor drive r behaviour such as harsh braking and speeding, this seems to bring out a competitive streak with drivers and encourages them to drive carefully and efficiently.
