A new pilot project has begun in North Wales will allow parents to use satellite tracking to check their children are on the school bus. The Scheme is called STAR, children will be required to swipe a card when they get on and off the bus. This will help parents to check on their attendance.
The STAR scheme is part of a project called Zoon, this project is trying to improve bad behaviour on school buses. This scheme is scheduled to run for one year, if successful it will be rolled out in Wales in 2010. It is also aimed at helping drivers, they will have access to a small screen from which they can take a picture of a child who is misbehaving then send a report to the school and local authorities.
Other elements of the scheme include training 14 year old children to become bus monitors, and better training for bus drivers on how to manage pupil behaviour. Whether or not children would be enthusiastic to become a monitor remains to be seen.
A Zoom representative explained “we don’t believe its spying on the children, its all governed by the data protection act.” Whether the children will agree with that is another question.
