The department of health www.dh.gov.uk have recently announced in a report that they will be issuing 3000 lone worker alarms that will be able to location track their NHS lone workers.

The systems being used are supplied by a company called Reliance and are called the i750 identicom devices, it has been reported the project will be centrally funded for the first 2 years of this 3 year contract.

The devices will be linked to a call centre that will be able to locate the worker and have the ability to record events in a legally permissive way in order to be able to bring cases forward for prosecution where necessary.
The devices reportedly follow a pledge made by the Heath Secretary Alan Johnson and predecessor John Reid asking for alarms to be provided to staff within the community.

Alan Johnson was reported to say that he feels Lone workers are particularly vulnerable and that he wants to provide them with as much protection as possible so they can continue their valuable work with the comfort of knowing that they have the support they need should their personal safety be threatened. This just goes to show that tracking systems can be used for all sectors and areas of business.

The alarms which were said to be rolled out from the 7th May were announced by Anne Duffy, Chief Executive of the Community and District Nurses Association. She was also quoted to say in the report that she herself has campaigned for safety for nurses for some time and that we have a duty of care to nurses as they care for us all.

It is thought that the alarms will initially go to the workers that work directly with patients and families that have history of such things as violence and drug abuse. Also they will go to staff that work in areas of social deprivation and high crime rates.
