Location monitoring forms a key part of many tracking systems. It is a highly sought after feature by many businesses through the benefits it is able to provide. Often referred to as a Geofence it is also known as a landmark, point of interest or ring fence.

Location monitoring, as its name suggests, allows a tracking user to easily observe fleet activity within a specified area of the tracking systems mapping. Many tracking systems allow users to place their own ‘ring fences’ over the area they would like to monitor, commonly these are customers, suppliers or driver’s home addresses. For many tracking systems, the number of locations that can be monitored is limitless.

When a vehicle is within a monitored location it is reported by the tracking system in real time and in the historic reports provided by the application. This makes identifying the locations that a vehicle has visited much easier as it provides a name (specified by the user upon creation of the Geofence) for the address/area, such as a customers or employee’s home.

The majority of tracking systems allow users to be alerted via text message, email or on-screen notifications whenever a vehicle enters or leaves a Geofence. This keeps managers informed of a driver’s daily progress without the need to refer to the tracking system.
