Vehicle Tracking Systems are clearly a controversial piece of equipment and has some employees feeling like they are being watched in a ‘big brother’ way. It is an introduction of change that must be carried out carefully and installed for the right reasons by the employer. The main reason for installing such fleet tracking systems should purely be a cost matter and any company not using a GPS system is currently losing money by the day. Employers have commented that employees have taken more kindly to the installations when offered an incentive for having them fitted. For instance, your staff could have monthly awards for the most frugal driver that month and therefore promote healthy competition and take away the negative thoughts of being tracked. Having a tracker fitted also has a sub conscious effect on your employees and in this current climate where people want to secure their jobs and prove they are indispensible, having a tracking system fitted could benefit their cause.
In addition to the above, having these systems fitted helps to provide weight to a Driving at Work policy which all companies should have. The managers can view the behaviour of their drivers and warn them if they are breaking speed limits or just generally not performing in the way they should. It has been reported that the police are welcoming such systems as now any fatal RTA is deemed as an unlawful killing and the police can demand to see company’s records and stats when the vehicle has been used for business use. Based upon this, it may mean that companies will have to provide employees with company vehicles, rather than allow the employee to use their own vehicle and claim for company mileage used. Employees do not appreciate their own vehicles being tracked and therefore will no longer be of any use to the company as satellite tracking systems will no doubt become a must for businesses success in the future. So it remains that times are moving fast and both employers and employees need to stay with it and get used to the fact that fleet management tracking is increasing at a great rate.
