Haulage companies that are seeking a vehicle tracking system for their business can greatly benefit from solutions that integrate with their vehicle CAN-bus or OBD port. Where these solutions differ from other tracking systems is that they are able to provide more data relating to driver behaviour and fuel efficiency.
These advanced fuel monitoring systems are generally more focused towards businesses that operate a fleet of HGVs, as with smaller vehicles it can be difficult to achieve the return on investment that sets these solutions apart from other tracking systems. Haulage companies that have installed a tracking system that integrated with the vehicles CAN-bus or OBD port have been able to lower their fleet’s fuel bill by as much as 15%, a significant cost saving.
The majority of modern vehicles use a CAN-bus system. A CAN-bus system allows a vehicle’s onboard ECUs (Electronic Control Units) to communicate with each other. Vehicle tracking systems that are able to be integrated with a CAN-bus system/OBD port communicate the vehicle’s data to the user via the tracking device. The data these tracking systems can provide include engine revs, vehicle odometer readings as well as fuel efficiency data such as MPG (miles per gallon) performance and the amount of fuel a vehicle has consumed.
