GPS vehicle tracking system hardware generally refers to the tracking devices themselves. Many companies throughout the UK are purchasing GPS tracking systems to help their business benefit from the many advantages that these systems are able to provide.
The GPS vehicle tracking system hardware is a small device that when installed into a vehicle receives signals from multiple GPS satellites that are orbiting the Earth. Most tracking devices need to receive GPS transmissions from at least 3 – 4 satellites in order to provide an accurate service. The tracking device uses these signals received from GPS satellites to accurately calculate their current position. Once the position has been established, the tracking device then calculates its speed and direction of travel. This data is then sent back to the user, via the mobile phone GPRS network, at timed intervals which is normally once every 60 seconds. The vehicle tracking data is then made available to users via a software application that receives data updates via the internet.
In addition to the location updates that are sent by the tracking hardware, many devices are able to provide additional information as well. These devices can also be integrated with a driver id system, the vehicle’s CANbus or a temperature sensor which can be added to monitor cold storage trailers.
