The UK’s largest bike race, the tour of Britain began on the 11th September and is due to finish on the 19th September, for the first time fans will be able track the races progress in real time using GPS tracking technology.
GPS tracking hardware is fitted to the race packs leading and trailing motorbikes, this will allow fans with internet access on computers or mobile phones to monitor the packs location, and even allow them to view rider speeds.
GPS tracking can potentially revolutionise cycling for fans and possibly attract a lot of new fans. It allows fans to feel more of a part of the actual race and converse with other fans via chat forums as the race progresses discussing possible tactics of that riders might be employing.
This could also boost other long distance sports such as marathons; rally driving, sailing and long distance horse races. All these sports suffer from fans not being able to get totally involved in the race at all times, GPS tracking allows them to. Another potential benefit to these sports could be bigger revenues from advertising. More fans obviously attract more opportunity for companies to generate money through advertising and sponsorship.
