The introduction and proliferation of GPS tracking systems have reduced losses due to theft throughout the motor industry; the same technology is now being applied to farm machinery with great success. Farming is so time-sensitive that loss can be catastrophic; when weather conditions are perfect for spraying chemicals or when crops are ready to be harvested, the last thing a farmer can deal with is a delay due to equipment going missing and the problems involved of dealing with insurance claims.
A GPS tracking system can alert the farmer, the moment a vehicle or piece of equipment is moved; a boundary can be set where any breach of the boundary by one of the farmer’s vehicles is immediately brought to his attention through his mobile phone or computer screen; the same system can enable the stolen vehicle to be located and returned easily. Theft of farm equipment is a growing problem as vehicles are exported to Third World countries under the noses of the authorities. As the cost of installation of GPS tracking systems becomes cheaper with the growth of the number of suppliers, the need to join the trend of farmers taking advantage of this technology is becoming increasingly apparent to the agricultural community.
