GPS tracking systems have become so much more of an asset to companies than could have been foreseen when this technology was launched. No longer a method of preventing loss of vehicles, it has evolved to be able to perform a multitude of functions.
Ambulance (GB) Limited is one such company that is using GPS tracking systems to not only to track the location and progress of its ambulances, but to relay life saving information back to its base.
One of the functions that Ambulance (GB) are utilising, allows them to monitor when blue lights are activated, so that the company is able to verify that correct usage is being applied to the blue light operation. The GPS devices installed within their vehicles sends information to a central computer through the mobile data network every second.
Each ambulance is fitted with a discreet panic button capable of sending an alert to a 24 hour manned control centre. In addition, advice can be sent concerning traffic delays at a touch of a button shaving critical minutes off what could often be a life saving journey. The company that fitted this has installed GPS tracking devices in more than 10,000 vehicles in the UK since it started in 1995.
