A GPS tracking unit is a device that uses satellites to locate the exact position of a person, vehicle or an asset. The data that a GPS tracking device provides an be stored and recovered at a later date or transmitted to a data base, a computer with an internet connection or a mobile device. The information provided by the GPS tracking device can be displayed on a map using special software, this can be done in real time or at a later date.
GPS tracking devices fall in to three categories, data loggers, data pushers and data pullers. Data loggers log the location of the device at regular intervals and stores it to an internal memory. Data loggers have either a memory card or USB port so that the data can be downloaded.
Data pushers is a device that sends the position of a GPS tracking device at regular intervals to a server which analyzes data instantly.
Data pullers unlike a data pusher that sends the location of a device at regular intervals, pull the information, they are always on and can be looked at as often as required. These are often used when the information is only needed if an asset is stolen or mislaid.
