A Global positioning tracking device is being used as evidence against a man accused of four counts of arson. Lawyers for the prosecution state that a GPS tracking device placed in his vehicle proves that his truck was placed at all four of the scenes of crime. The assistant attorney insists the evidence will be crucial in winning the case, and taking a dangerous criminal off the streets.
The state police had to first obtain a search warrant from the court to allow them to place a GPS tracking device in the suspect’s truck. This allowed them to track the movements of the suspect twenty four hours a day; this saved them many man hours due to the fact they did not have to tie up officers to trail the suspect’s vehicle.
The suspects defence team have questioned the reliability of the GPS data gathered by the police and offered by the prosecution, they claim that there is no physical evidence or eye witnesses to prove that his vehicle was anywhere near the scenes of crime. The trial is expected to last two weeks and could set a precedent in law about GPS tracking data being allowed to used as evidence in future trials.
