An article appeared in a Chicago newspaper at the weekend explaining that when public school students return to school next week, they will find their school buses have all gone high tec. All school buses will be fitted with GPS technology and in-vehicle data terminals. This will help make the school bus system greener and safer.
It has so many benefits for the children using these services, a major benefit is safety. The location of the bus will be monitored during the duration of its trip, and with the mobile data terminal it will greatly benefit children with special needs.
A mobile data terminal allows bus drivers to track special needs students when they board or exit a bus by inputting the information into their data terminal. This reduces the risk of student being left behind or dropped at the wrong place which has occurred before. With mobile data terminals installed it allows a bus driver to be contacted immediately if this happens.
It is hoped that this GPS technology will help cut fuel costs as well; this will be done by re-routing buses to avoid congestion. When a controller spots a traffic build up along a route the bus is due to take he can re-direct it to take a less congested route.
