An article recently written in a local paper in the state of Minnesota explains how GPS tracking devices are helping to stop violence. In 2004 a ladies ex-husband shot their daughter and then took his own life after ignoring multiple protection orders against him. This type of situation occurs across America where three women are killed each day during domestic disputes. Roughly a quarter of these murders happen even though the offender has had protection orders against him.
To reduce the number of incidents, legislators across a dozen states in America have passed a law which allows courts to order an offender to wear a GPS tracking device attached to their ankles. An alarm triggered if an offender enters a zone such as a home, work place or another designated area. Campaigners for more of these devices to be used in situations where protection orders are broken, point to the fact that a study of 5,000 cases in which these devices were used, showed a decrease in violence against their ex-wives.
A GPS device won’t ever completely stop women being victims of violence at the hands of abusive ex-partners, but it could at least help to reduce the number of incidents of women being murdered.
