Geofences & real time alerts form a fundamental part of any tracking system. Importantly, they provide the levels of monitoring users need so that they do not need to be sat in front of their computer screens watching the tracking system.

A Geofence, also known as a Point of Interest (POI) or landmark, allows a tracking user to ‘ring fence’ a location such as a customer or employee address. Each time a vehicle enters or exits a Geofence it is recorded. Many of the tracking systems available allow users to further customise Geofences through being able to adjust the size and shape of the ring fence i.e. circle, rectangle or a polygon. Users are able to name Geofences as a customers or employees name. When users look back at historic journey reports Geofence names make it easier for the user to recognise addresses.

Many tracking systems come with standard Geofences that can be activated by the user such as the London congestion zones.

Real time alerts are another important tool. Alerts can keep users informed of exceptional events by email or text message without them needing to refer to the tracking system. These exceptions may include excessive speeding or idling, entry/exit of a Geofence or movement during certain hours of the day.
