Businesses that are considering, or in the process of introducing, a tracking system to their company are often keen to understand the systems features and how they work. Geofences are one of the most sought after features in a tracking system.
Geofences, also known as ring fences, landmarks and points of interest (POIs), allow a tracking user to place a virtual ‘ring fence’ around a specified location. Most tracking systems allow the user to add these via the tracking application where they are able to specify the location, size and shape (circle, polygon or rectangle etc) of the Geofence. The user is also required to name the Geofence with a name such as that of a customer, employee or office location.
Primarily Geofences can help tracking users to identify where their vehicles have visited during the day. For example, if a business adds the addresses of their customers as Geofences and names them accordingly, whenever a vehicle enters or stops at a ring fenced location it will be reported as being at the Geofence address as opposed to just being a location.
In addition, Geofences also allow tracking users to monitor locations and provide an alert whenever a vehicle enters or exits the ring fence. This has proved very useful for companies that want to increase the security of their vehicles or prevent employees from visiting locations that they should not during working hours.
