Vehicle tracking systems are becoming increasingly popular with record numbers of companies installing solutions in to their fleets. But not all tracking systems are the same and a new breed of tracking systems which incorporate technology to save fuel through better driving are receiving a great deal of interest.
With benefits including reduced fuel consumption, improved driver safety and a smaller carbon footprint, it is easy to why companies with larger fleets are considering them. A typical Fuel Efficiency Solution customer will have a fleet of 25 plus HGV or large passenger transport vehicles, although the cost is significantly higher (as much as five times that of a standard tracking solution) so are the rewards. Companies running Fuel Efficiency Solutions report up to 15% saving in fuel usage which can equate to millions in savings.
So how do they work? Fuel Efficiency Solutions combine vehicle tracking technology with a CAN-bus interface and a simple driver display. The system links in with the vehicles own computer system and knows when the vehicle is being driven at it’s most efficient. The system then relays this information via a simple LED traffic light display to the driver who can adjust their driving accordingly.
The systems not only tell the driver the most efficient way to drive but also monitor heavy breaking, harsh acceleration and some systems even report on cornering speeds. This information and the tracking data is then relayed to servers and is available to the company at any time.
Most solutions provide a multitude of performance reports and driver league tables which help create an efficient culture and are an excellent opportunity to reward the most efficient drivers.
