Fleet tracking systems are helping businesses in a range of industry sectors to save money and increase their employee’s productivity and vehicles security. For this reason, more companies are keen to introduce these systems to their business to obtain the benefits that can make a key difference to end of month profits.
Fleet tracking systems use a small device that is installed normally behind the dashboard of the vehicle. The tracking device receives transmissions from GPS (Global Position System) satellites. Using the data received from the satellites the tracking device is able to calculate its real time global location to a high level of accuracy.
A real time fleet tracking system will then send the location data, as well as speed and direction of travel, to the tracking supplier’s secure service via the mobile data (GPRS) network, normally every 1 to 2 mins whilst the vehicle is active. A user is then able to access the tracking data via a software application where they are able to view the location of their vehicles as well as being able to view historic journey, out of hours travelling and driver performance reports.
In addition, many fleet tracking systems provide real time alerts that are able to keep users informed of key activity, such as arrival at a destination or excessive speeding, via email or SMS (text) message.
