Vehicle tracking systems are provided with many standard features that help business owners and fleet managers to supervise their vehicles. However, the majority of tracking suppliers also offer customers additional features that are not included in a standard package that will provide them with increased monitoring and reporting capabilities. Two of these additional features are temperature monitoring and driver identification.
Temperature monitoring, as its name suggests, monitors and reports a vehicle/trailer’s ambient temperature. In the refrigerated and frozen food distribution industry it is essential that the temperatures set out in guidelines is maintained. Failure to do so can result in a Lorrie’s cargo being written off, resulting in substantial costs that will be incurred by the distribution company. Tracking systems that use temperature monitors are able to instantly alert an office/manager if the temperature of a trailer rises or falls below specified limit, protecting the cargo.
Driver identification systems keep companies informed as to which employee is operating a vehicle. In addition, these systems can also control which drivers are able to use vehicles. Driver ID systems normally require the driver to carry a small data key or radio tag. The driver must use the data key/radio tag to start the vehicle (as well as the standard vehicle key) which is then recorded by the tracking system. Driver ID systems are ideal for companies that have employees using multiple vehicles.
