Throughout the UK many borough and county councils are using vehicle tracking systems to help them manage their fleet of vehicles. Many councils are using these systems to meet their targets of improving efficiency and reducing costs.
Vehicle tracking is most popular with businesses. Companies install these systems to monitor their vehicles movements and locations which helps them to ensure that employees are where they are supposed to be, they are driving responsibly and meeting their daily targets. Vehicle tracking systems also allow these companies to monitor the routes that their drivers take to reach destinations as well as monitor fuel wasting activity such as excessive idling, speeding and aggressive driving (harsh acceleration and braking). In turn, companies are able to substantially reduce their monthly fuel bills increasing their overall profit margins.
County & borough councils are able to achieve all of these benefits as well but they can also be used to help with the management and supervision of other types of vehicles such as sweeper or gritter lorries. Many councils are now using vehicle tracking to gain added visibility over their gritter and sweeper lorries to ensure that they are covering the correct roads/areas. In addition, many tracking systems can even monitor when the gritter or sweeper mechanism is in use and can be confident that they have been able to accurately monitor their vehicles progress.
