The applications of GPS tracking have been developing since it was made available for civilian use. GPS was developed by the U.S military for surveillance purposes, and is in fact still controlled by them. The civilian version of GPS has a downgraded accuracy rating, for security purposes, but is still the most effective tracking technology available.
This is why parents over the UK have been purchasing child tracking systems. Since the Sarah Payne case in the 1990’s child abduction cases have been well publicised, and parents are quite rightly alarmed.
One way that child tracking works is through mobile phones. The majority of children have mobile phones, and have their phones with them the majority of the time. GPS enabled mobile phones and PDAs can be used to provide live tracking data which allows parents to view their child’s real time location and movements. This way, parents have the peace of mind of knowing where their child is, and the child gets to explore their own independence.
Parents of newly qualified drivers also use GPS tracking. A system installed into a car can save them money on insurance, let them know their child’s location and provide reports on the way that the vehicle is being driven.
