Interest in pleasure boating is on the increase across world, providing high revenue in sales and tourism. With the increased popularity comes a down side, a level of theft has grown at a quite worrying rate. Between 2006 and 2008 over nineteen thousand watercraft thefts occurred in just America alone. The problem is not just confined to the yachting industry, its happening to speed boats, power boats, jet skis and every other kind of watercraft are subject to the attention of thieves.
The high rate of theft has forced the majority of boat owners to consider protecting their craft by installing GPS tracking devices. The use of a GPS tracking device can prevent an owner’s pride and joy being stolen. A properly equipped marina can track the movement of any of the craft within its care merely by watching a computer screen, they can if they wish arrange for a departing boat to be intercepted if it’s leaving without the owner’s permission.
A stolen boat can normally be located so quickly that many are found just a few feet from the marina they have been taken from. This is a clear indication of the cost effectiveness of a GPS device and the false economy of trying to manage without.
