GPS tracking is now in very high demand by construction firms as plant equipment theft have risen dramatically in the last few years, UK government figures show that in 2007 over one million pounds per week of plant equipment was being stolen. Stolen plant equipment is often shipped to eastern bloc countries, but has been found as far as China.
When having GPS tracking devices installed the general advice is not to be reliant on the Plants own power source. As thieves have become aware that GPS tracking devices are becoming more and more popular, cases have been reported of thieves tracing the power cables that power the GPS tracking device.
The best way to power the GPS tracking device is with a battery that will last for three to five years. The GPS tracking device will be placed in an area of the plant equipment that is accessible but not obvious, also these devices are capable of being removed if the plant equipment were too be sold.
If a company happens to have as piece of plant equipment stolen all it has to do is turn on their computer and log onto their GPS tracking software which will give them the exact location to within a few meters of their equipment.
